Your desktop,
alive.

Quint puts live panels, called quintlets, right on your desktop between the wallpaper and your icons: the time, a weather radar, a traffic camera, your Mac's vital signs, the output of any shell command. Start with about 106 ready-made snippets, or write your own. A modern homage to GeekTool, built for current macOS. Coming from GeekTool?

Six Types of Quintlet

Anything you can reach, you can show.

Every quintlet has one type, chosen when you create it. Most people never need to write a line of code; the ones who do are very well served.

Shell

Runs a Terminal command on a timer and shows what it prints, ANSI colors included. Set Refresh to 0 or click Live and it re-runs the moment it finishes, for real-time views.

AppleScript

Ask other apps questions, like the current Music track or your next Calendar event, and show the answer. macOS asks permission per app, once.

File

Shows the last lines of a text file such as a log, with an optional regular-expression filter to keep only the lines you care about.

Image

A web picture, a file, or a folder slideshow, scaled to any size. Animated GIFs play. Web pictures reload on a timer for traffic cams, radar and satellite.

Web

A live web page on your desktop, with an optional outline and drop shadow, for the pages that update themselves.

Shape

Frames and lines you draw to box in or divide parts of your desktop, with thickness, dashed or dotted styles, color, rounded corners and fill.

Program Guide

Everything the app actually does.

Arrange it, style it, group it, switch it, share it, sync it.

CH 01

Ready-made snippets

About 106 quintlets you add in one click, in plain-English categories, from Clock to Local Radar to Rocket Launches. Many have a form: a date picker, a city picker, a checklist. See the code first if you like.

CH 02

Arrange mode

Drag quintlets where you want them and resize from the corner handle. They snap to each other, the screen margin and an optional grid with dashed guides; hold ⌘ to bypass. ⇧-click to move several at once; ⌘Z undoes.

CH 03

Tidy Up

One click snaps every quintlet into a neat grid on your main display, grouped by type, group, name or size, with Undo.

CH 04

Scenes & groups

Whole desktop layouts, one showing at a time: fun, Mac stats, work. Switch from the Studio tabs, the menu bar, ⌥⌘1–9 or AppleScript. Groups show, hide, fade and collapse; a clock can show in every scene.

CH 05

Fonts, color & effects

A searchable font picker that shows each family in its own typeface, size, color, opacity, letter and line spacing, shadow, glow and outline, a background panel, and a Pulse effect. Copy one quintlet's look onto another, or restyle everything at once.

CH 06

Your location, once

Save a place once and local radar, weather, sunrise, tides and planes overhead fill in for you. Search an address through Apple Maps, or use your current location.

CH 07

Share a quintlet

Send one quintlet, a group or your whole desktop as a small .quintlet file with the Mac share sheet. The person opening it sees a review screen showing what each one runs and contacts; code quintlets start switched off. Your location is never included.

CH 08

Sync between Macs

Pick a folder in iCloud Drive, Google Drive or Dropbox and your quintlets follow you. Positions and sizes stay per Mac, and code that arrives from another Mac waits for your approval. No account to create.

CH 09

Bring your GeekTool scripts

Any Terminal command or AppleScript you used in GeekTool can be pasted in. The built-in Help explains what changed since the old days, and old .geeklet files still open.

CH 10

Scriptable

Quint has its own AppleScript dictionary: refresh all, add a snippet, read a quintlet's output, switch scenes, toggle Arrange. Drive it from Script Editor or Shortcuts.

CH 11

Menu bar & Studio

The Studio lists your quintlets and their settings, with a live output box, run status and a Run Now button. Close it and Quint keeps running from the menu bar. Light, Dark or System appearance; launch at login.

CH 12

Light on memory

A RAM readout in the Studio footer and a Memory card in Settings show what Quint is using. Quintlets in a hidden scene or group stop running and free their pictures, and Free Up Memory hands the rest back.

CH 13

Pictures that move

Radar and satellite loops, traffic cameras and webcams, live pictures of the Sun from NASA spacecraft. Fit, Fill or Stretch to any size, with a stroke and drop shadow if you like.

CH 14

Built-in Help

A searchable Help window (⌘?) covers every feature, written in plain English, with Troubleshooting when a quintlet comes up blank.

CH 15

Updates itself

Sparkle checks a signed update feed and verifies every update before installing it. Your quintlets and settings are kept.

CH 16

Free, tip-supported

No account, no subscription, no ads. If Quint earns a place on your desktop, a tip keeps it going.

The Snippet Library

All 106 quintlets, ready to drop in.

Pick a category, press Add to Desktop. Snippets only read information (time, battery, music, weather); none change your files or settings. The ones that fetch data say which public site they contact. Read the whole list as a page or see what people put on their desktops.

Monitor Wall

See it running.

The Studio window is where you build; the desktop is where it all lives.

Born From GeekTool

A desktop that shows you things.

GeekTool taught a generation of Mac users that the desktop could be more than a picture: a place for a log tail, a clock, a radar map, the output of whatever script you cared about. Then the Mac moved on and the idea got harder to keep alive.

Quint is an homage and a rebuild. It is a native Mac app for current macOS, with the same freedom (any command, any script, any picture or page) and the things the old days never had: ready-made snippets so nobody has to start from a blank box, snapping and scenes so the desktop stays tidy, safe sharing, and sync between your Macs.

The desktop is the one screen you always see. Quint makes it earn its space.
Desktops Worth Having

What people put on theirs.

The Mac stats desk

CPU, memory, battery, disk, network speed and top processes in a corner, live, in your own font and color. A GeekTool classic.

The weather and sky desk

Local radar loop, forecast, alerts, sunrise, tides, the next ISS pass, and the aurora forecast.

The work desk

A countdown, a to-do list, a sticky note, world clocks, stock symbols and the headlines you follow, in a scene of their own.

The geek's desk

Log tails, listening ports, DNS timing, your own scripts. See the code, change the code, share it as a .quintlet file.

Quick Start

On the desktop in about a minute.

01

Download the DMG and drag Quint.app onto the Applications folder shown inside the disk image.

02

Open Quint, click Snippets, pick something like Clock or Weather Radar and choose Add to Desktop.

03

Click Arrange, drag it where you want it, and click Done Arranging. Close the Studio; Quint keeps running from the menu bar.

Compatibility Notes

A real Mac app, nothing hidden.

Signed & notarized

Built and notarized through Apple's own process, so it opens like any other Mac app.

macOS 14 or later

Quint is a native SwiftUI and AppKit app. Quintlets sit on the desktop between the wallpaper and your icons.

Stays up to date on its own

Sparkle checks for updates automatically and verifies the signed update before installing it.

Frequently Asked

Quint, answered.

Is Quint the same as Geeklet?

Yes. Quint was called Geeklet until version 1.4.0. The modules are now called quintlets and use the .quintlet file type, though older .geeklet files still open and your existing setup carries over.

Do I need to know how to code?

No. The snippet library covers clocks, weather, radar, cameras, news, Mac health and more, with forms for the settings. If you do write shell or AppleScript, paste it in, including scripts from the GeekTool days.

Is it safe to open a quintlet someone sends me?

A review screen opens first and nothing is added until you press Add. It shows what each quintlet runs and which websites it contacts. Quintlets that run code start switched off. Only open files from people you trust.

Does Quint send my data anywhere?

There are no accounts, analytics or ads. Snippets that fetch data contact the public site they name, such as the National Weather Service, and update checks go to GitHub. Your saved location stays on your Mac and is never included when you share. The privacy page has the details.

How does sync work, and do I need an account?

No account. Quint shares one small file through a folder your Macs already sync (iCloud Drive, Google Drive or Dropbox). Positions, sizes and which quintlets are on stay per Mac, and shell or AppleScript changes from another Mac need your approval first.

Why do some commands not show, like top or tail -f?

A command has to print its answer and finish. Quint tells you right away if one does not, and suggests an alternative, like the Top (live) snippet. Set Refresh to 0 or click Live to keep a command updating in real time.

How does Quint's tip-supported pricing work?

You can download and use Quint without a required payment, account or subscription. If you like it, please buy me a coffee. Tips support continued development.
