Desktop widgets for Mac that show anything

Updated 2026-10-16

Quint puts live panels, called quintlets, right on your Mac desktop between the wallpaper and your icons. A quintlet can show the time, a weather radar, a traffic camera, your Mac's CPU and battery, the next ISS pass, or the output of any shell command or AppleScript, at any size, anywhere you drag it.

Widgets that show whatever you ask

Mac widgets are usually cards supplied by apps. Quint works the other way round: you decide what a panel shows. Pick one of the 106 ready-made snippets, or point a quintlet at anything you can reach with a command, a script, a picture address or a web page. The six quintlet types are Shell, AppleScript, File, Image, Web and Shape.

What people put on the desktop

  • The weather and sky desk: local radar and radar loops, forecast, alerts, sunrise and sunset, tides, the next ISS pass, planets in your sky and the aurora forecast.
  • The Mac stats desk: CPU, memory, battery, disk, network speed and top processes, live, in your own font and color.
  • The work desk: a countdown, a to-do list, a sticky note, world clocks, stock symbols and the headlines you follow, in a scene of their own.
  • The news and data desk: world headlines from about 25 sources, sports scores with TV channels, earthquakes, gas prices, national debt, recalls and airport delays.
  • The geek's desk: log tails, listening ports, DNS timing and your own scripts.

Arrange it your way

Click Arrange, then drag quintlets where you want them and resize from the corner handle. They snap to each other, the screen margin and an optional grid with dashed guides. Select several with ⇧-click, undo with ⌘Z, and press Tidy Up to lay everything out in a neat grid. Scenes keep separate desktops for work, play and Mac stats and switch with ⌥⌘1 to ⌥⌘9.

Make it look right

Choose any installed font from a searchable picker that shows each family in its own typeface, then set size, color, opacity, letter and line spacing, shadow, glow, outline, a background panel and a Pulse effect. Copy one quintlet's look onto another, or restyle everything at once.

Free, signed and kept up to date

Quint is free for macOS 14 or later, signed and notarized by Apple, and updates itself through Sparkle. It is supported by optional tips. If you are coming from GeekTool, see Quint as a GeekTool alternative.

Questions

Can I put widgets anywhere on the Mac desktop?

Yes. Quintlets sit between your wallpaper and your desktop icons. Drag them anywhere in Arrange mode, resize them from a corner handle, and they snap to each other and the screen edges.

Do I need to write code?

No. Quint includes 106 ready-made snippets, from clocks and weather radar to ISS passes and gas prices, with forms for the settings. If you do write code, you can paste in any shell command or AppleScript.

Can I have different layouts for work and play?

Yes. Scenes are whole desktop layouts, one showing at a time. Switch from the Studio tabs, the menu bar, or ⌥⌘1 to ⌥⌘9.

Will it slow my Mac down?

Quint shows its own memory use in the Studio footer and in Settings. Quintlets in a hidden scene or group stop running and free their pictures, and Free Up Memory hands unused memory back to macOS.

Is Quint free?

Yes, free and tip-supported. You can buy me a coffee if you like it.
